It found this uninstall string as being invalid, The Norton Windoctor does the same stupidity and is why I NEVER allow ANY software to make automatic changes without showing me what they plan on doing. Of course, if that particular CD is not in the drive, the folder doesn't exist.īut the "nasty" thing that Reg1Aid does, is that it "guesses" if there are missing files, and if it finds one with the same name, it points to it instead. Example, the SFC entry that defaults to E:\Win98. > other entries that point to files that are not there. > files in programs file lists (such as Word/Winzip) that no longer exist > files in MRU (Most recently used) lists that no longer exist Just as a FYI, all "errors" found by these types of programs are not necessarily real "errors".įor example, Registry First Aid flags the following things as errors: Norton tends to be over helpful like suggesting other links which are obviously nonesense.Īnybody else like to chip in. I have Norton WinDoctor and whilst I haven't seen this particular problem I would have thought it would have been a little more specific. Restoring a previous registry will not only keep the offending item but everything else the application placed there and, of course, the application will be gone. Have you uninstalled anything recently which, per chance, left anything behind either mistakenly or at your request or removed a control without checking that it may be in use elsewhere? It maybe that the Active X control is no longer used by anything and you'll have a situation analogous to a dead link. The question is when was the last time you ran Norton Win Doctor? If that was a couple of weeks ago then every registry backup you have may produce the same result.ĭO NOT start systematically restoring the registry with backups as you'll find, as has recently been posted, you'll end up with no more than half of your backup set being available. If something is missing or inactive then even a brilliant registry repair program isn't going to restore the status quo ante.
